![]() In spite of what Albert Hardin says in his 1964 book "The American Bayonet," nobody knows for sure. ![]() Here is the plastic MK1 training bayonet with the proper fiberglass scabbard and both are distinctly marked as such. One will usually find the MK1 bayonet scabbard incorrectly placed on regular steel bayonets but that is not really correct either. What is certain is that there were plenty of fiberglass MK1 scabbards made for the trainer bayonets during the war and all were sold as surplus after 1945. ![]() Some think they were made up by surplus dealers in order to sell with scabbardless MK1 plastic bayonets. Some collectors think these were the first scabbard issued with the MK1 USN training bayonet and that view is supported by Hardin in his bayonet book.
